On 11 April 1917 he was discharged as no longer physically fit for war service. He suffered from Neurasthenia, and subsequently whilst serving in Malta had a nervous breakdown.9
In his military record, he was described as 5 feet 10½ inches, with a fresh complexion, blue eyes, and dark brown hair.9
On his discharge from the Army, he lived at 87 Howard Road, Walthamstow, Essex.9
His wife, Sarah, died on 19 September 1924 in Church Lodge, Wood Street, Barnet, Middlesex.10,11

Benham, of the Stock Exchange, formerly a most respected resident of Marlesford, and Westcliff, and a prominent member of the East Anglian Society, by the death of his younger son, Leslie Vernon. Which occurred as a result of a motor cycle accident on the 13th inst. at the early age of 23.4
