An old and highly respected resident of the Ravenswood district, where he had resided for over 41 years Mr. William Partington Pask died at his home in William-street West End, last week, at the age of 86 years. The late Mr. Pask was a native of Liverpool, England, and may never have, seen Australia but for the circumstances, that brought him to these shores at the age of eleven years as cabin boy on a sailing ship. At that tender age he was sent to sea for a health trip, but on the vessel's arrival at Willlamstown in October 1864 he yielded to elderly advice to escape indifferent treatment by abandoning ship. With eighteen pence in his pocket he went to the Sailors' Club and from there went out into the world to find his own destiny. His boyhood days were spent in Victoria on farm work and odd jobs, many of them not too lucrative, and he subsequently drifted into New South Wales, where be remained for several years. Coming to Queensland in the late seventies he obtained work on Coorada Station, where he met and married Miss Margaret Stewart and the couple came north to Rockhampton where Mr. Pask worked for 12 months. In December, 1878, he arrived in Townsville and set off to walk to Ravenswood. He remained there for one day and started off for Charters Towers. Finding the Burdekin in flood at Rishton, he walked upstream to the old railway bridge, where be changed his plans on securing employment as a bullock driver. He later returned to Rockhampton to bring Mrs. Pask to Townsville. On St. Patrick's Day of 1879 the couple set out by spring cart, but were delayed two days by a flood In the Ross. There followed a period of employment on the Townsville-Stewart's Creek railway and later on he supplied sleepers for the other sections to Torrens Creek, from which place he returned to Kirk River. Here the couple found a permanent abode, Mr. Pask entering business as a teamster and also entering into partnership with W. H. Philipson on a small grazing property. After 41 years the late Mr Pask and his wife came to Townsville—In 1930, and resided at William-street until his death. He is survived by the widow, four sons, three daughters, thirty grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Deceased had a cheerful disposition and made many friends to whom his passing was a signal for regret.⁹
