Bertram was killed in action on 16 September 1914, fighting in World War I in the Battle of the Aisne, France, at the age of 34. He attained the rank of Sergeant and his service number was 5115.¹¹
Bertram is commemorated in perpetuity in La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, La Ferte-sous-Jouarre, Seine-et-Marne, France.¹¹
His death was announced in the Northampton Independent on 5 December 1914.¹² It read:
