HAVERHILL LOVE TRAGEDY.
About half-past six o'clock on Monday evening week a young men named William Thake, a cloth-presser, of Haverhill, made an attempt upon the life of his sweet-heart. Kate Pask, aged about 20, the daughter of a gardener. The couple had been courting for some time, but had had a quarrel the previous Saturday, when the girl dismissed him. On the night in question, the girl and her sister were walking homewards, when at a lonely part of the road they were met by Thake, who requested Kate to stop and speak with him. She declined, and Thake thereupon fired four shots at her, neither of which took effect, the girl's only injury being that her eyebrow was grazed. Thake thereupon made off, and the girl was taken home by her sister and a young man who had heard the reports. Thake was afterwards found lying on the roadside several miles away, having shot himself through the temple. He was taken to a neighbouring farmhouse, where he expired.
The inquest on deceased was held at the Great Wilse Farm, which is about a mile and a half from Haverhill on Wednesday morning by Mr. R.H. Wilson, coroner for the Liberty of Bury St. Edmund's. Evidence was given by the father of deceased that he was in a depressed and miserable state on Sunday and Monday.
- Kate Pask stated that she had been going with deceased for three years, but she was not engaged to him and had never promised to marry him, though she had accepted an engagement ring from him. She had been telling him for two years that she did not want to go with him and had sent his presents back. She narrated the circumstances of the assault on her by deceased on Monday which were similar to the particulars given. Deceased fired four shots at her. but her sister seized his arm and diverted his aim. -Evidence was given as to the finding of the deceased with a shot on the temple.
— A verdict of "Suicide during temporary insanity" was returned.4
