Advice has been received by Mrs. E. B. Sandilands, of Miramar, that her husband, Private Ernest Bruce Sandilands, was killed in action in Italy in April this year.
Private Sandilands was the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Sandilands, Kakariki, Halcombe.
He was educated in Palmerston North and later was employed by an electrical firm in Wellington, and at the same served as an auxiliary fireman at the Constable Street Fire Station.
He enlisted in 1941. He was a keen cyclist and won many notable races for the Poneke Club. In 1941 he held the Hughes and Walsh Cups.3
His obituary was detailed in an unidentifed New Zealand newspaper.3
The sad news was received by Mrs. E. B. Sandilands (nee Anita Fevre), of Miramar, that her husband, Private Ernest (Bruce) Sandilands, had been killed in action in Italy au April 17, 1945.
The late Bruce Sandilands was the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Sandilands, Kakariki, Halcombe.
Following his primary education and a course at the Palmerston North Technical High School, Bruce took up employment with an electrical firm in Wellington and at the same time served as an auxiliary fireman at the Constable Street fire station, where he was held in high esteem.
He only terminated this employment when answering his country 's call in 1941.
A keen cyclist, he carried the Poneke Club's colours to victory on many occasions, both on the road and on the track. In 1941 he held the "Hughes" and the much-prized "Walsh" cups.
Born of a pleasant disposition, he was ever ready to offer a helping hand to those in need. Endeared to all who knew him, he will missed by wide circle of friends both young and old.6
