Douglas Edward MILSOM1
Shortly after WWII was declared on 3 September 1939, with luggage label firmly attached, Doug was evacuated to Salcombe in Devon together with his younger brother Derek to a reception centre. After three weeks Doug and Derek were to be separated and sent to different homes. Doug immediately wrote home "Please come and get us; they're going to split us up." His parents straight away made the long train journey to Salcombe and returned with the boys to Dagenham. And so, as he used to say, most of his school days between the ages of nine and fourteen were spent in the air raid shelter at the bottom of the garden.
Having survived the bombing, he left school at 14 and straight away started work. Short trousers one day, long the next. He began working in a sports shop, followed by a spell at May & Baker as an office boy. He then worked as a messenger boy for the News Chronicle. He was in the ATC where he played the drums in the band. At the age of eighteen he was called for National Service and joined the RAF in 1949.
At an Easter Fair in 1950, at the age of 18, Doug met Thelma, aged 16. Ahead of him on the chair-o-planes were a couple of girls. All of a sudden all of their cash flew out of one of the girls' pockets! Doug and his friend were not slow to help pick it up and so their romance began. They wrote to each other everyday whilst Doug was away in the RAF. Many holidays were spent with Thelma's grandparents in Suffolk and this is where they decided to make their home.4
Douglas married Thelma Rose PASK, daughter of Jack PASK and Winifred Cecilia MORTLOCK, on 27 February 1954 at St. Mary's Church, Denham, Suffolk.5,6,1,2
By an odd quirk of fate, they rented Lilac Cottage in Ousden, the very same cottage in which Thelma's parents had begun their married life.
They moved to Hargrave and the daughter Carole was born there in 1957. In 1961, they moved to Newmarket and Doug got a job as a sales rep for a plumbing supplies business - a job which saw him travelling over 12 counties. He always preferred to return home if possible but found himself racing back rather quicker than expected when their son Nigel was born in 1964.4
In 1985, Douglas and Thelma moved from Newmarket to Lark Hill, Moulton, Suffolk. They lived there for the last 29 years of his life.7,4
Doug was first and foremost a family man, and it was appropriate that at the end of his life he should have all his family gathered around to say good-bye. They'd just celebrated Doug's 83rd birthday and his grandson Nathan's 30th birthday and Doug could look back on a life enriched by so much activity and love.4
Douglas died on 14 August 2014.2,8
His death was recorded on 21 August 2014 in the His death announcment in The Newmarket Journal on 21 August 2014 read:
His body was cremated. The funeral service was conducted by The Reverend Stephen Mitchell on 27 August 2014 at the West Suffolk Crematorium, Risby, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.7,4
