(1864 - 1940)
In the census of 5 April 1891 in 34 Warrior Road, Lambeth, London, she was listed as aged 29 born in Virginia Water Berks, the wife of Henry PASK (a Cabinet Maker living with his wife Mary, daughter Elsie L. M., son Arthur G. J., and an elderly aunt Harriet MITCHELL, a widow, a retired Chair Caner aged 69, born in Southwark).4
In the census of 31 March 1901 in 12 Ladywell Park, Lewisham, London, she was listed as Mary SHAW aged 39 born in Virginia Water, the wife of Leonard H. SHAW (a Cabinet Maker, living with his wife Mary, and children Arthur G. J., Grace M., Ada M., and Mercy M. The family were enumerated under the name of Leonard H. Obviously, they had taken Mary's maiden name. However why Henry called himself Leonard is not sure. Perhaps it was because he was a Shakespearian actor, and had changed his name. All other details except the surname were correct).6
In the census of 2 April 1911 in 25 Kent House Road, Sydenham, London, she was listed as aged 50 born in Virginia Water Surrey, the wife of Henry PASK (a French Polisher, living with his wife Mary, and children Grace, Ada, Mercy, Cecil, and Clarence).7,8 Mary was in a photograph taken in her latter years.9
Her husband, Henry, died on 14 February 1936 in 15 Lullington Road, Penge, Surrey, at the age of 81; at the home of his son. His occupation was a retired French Polisher.1,10,11
Mary died in 1940 in the Bromley registration district.12
Research Note: They had 14 children, although only 7 survived to maturity.
".. my grandfather was often out of work as a French Polisher, and also I might add a Shakespearian actor, both dubious occupations for that period of time, and he moved around as he got older and work got more difficult to come by. Indeed the family spent some time in the workhouse when my father was just a baby, where he caught bronchitis which plagued him all his life, so I suppose grandfather wanted to get work to spare the family having to endure this punishment again.13"
