George TANTON1,2

#7185, b. 5 February 1873, d. 29 March 1934
Last Edited=22 Aug 2015
George TANTON was born on 5 February 1873 in Coxes Mill, Broomfield, Somerset. He was the son of John & Charlotte TAUNTON / TANTON née PHILLIPS.2,3
George married Harriet PASK, daughter of Edward PASK and Eliza BRADSHAW, on 21 July 1898 in St. Luke's Church, Chelsea, London. He was a Bachelor aged 25, a Private in the 1st Coldstream Guards, residing at Chelsea Barracks. His father was listed as John Tanton, a Labourer. The marriage was witnessed by W. SWAMNELL?, and P. MARLER.1,4
In the census of 2 April 1911 in Duckmead Cottage, Duckmead Lodge, Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire, George was listed as aged 37 born in Broomfield Somerset, the Head of Household; a Domestic Gardener, living with his wife Harriet.5
Prior to his death, George was the landlord at the Fox and Hounds, Farleigh Wick, Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire.6,7
George died of drowning on 29 March 1934 in Farleigh Wick, Somerset, at the age of 61.2,8,6
His death was reported in the Western Daily Press, Bristol, Gloucestershire on 2 April 1934, it read:
DEPRESSED OWING TO WIFE’S ILLNESS.
Wilts Innkeeper Dead in Pond.
"That he drowned himself when depressed owing to his wife's illness" was the verdict returned at an inquest conducted by the Wiltshire coroner, Mr A.L. Forrester, at Bradford-on-Avon, on Saturday on George Tanton (60), landlord of the Fox and Hounds, Farleigh Wick, who was found drowned in a pond.
Evidence was given that Tanton had been depressed because his wife had gone to a nursing home.
On Tuesday evening he told a friend that his brain “was going," and that he did not have the strength to fight against things.
When a woman who cleaned for him went to the inn on Wednesday morning she found the door locked, and when the police entered it was discovered that the bed had not been slept in.
The police made a search, and next morning found the body in a pond about a quarter of a mile from the Fox and Hounds.6

His wife, Harriet, died on 10 July 1934 at Bailbrook House, Batheaston, Bath, Somerset.9,10
He was buried in 1934 in Monkton Farleigh, Wiltshire. His wife was later buried together with him.11
