Elizabeth HERD1

#2041, b. 1829, d. 19 July 1894
Last Edited=11 Mar 2018
Elizabeth HERD was born in 1829 in Heighington, Lincolnshire. Her parents were John and Margaret HERD.1,2,3
Elizabeth married Michael PASK, son of Michael PASK and Martha SMITH, on 25 May 1853 in St. John the Evangelist's Church, Washingborough, Lincolnshire. She was a Spinster of full age residing at Washingborough. Her father was listed as John HERD, a Farmer. The marriage was witnessed by Thomas PASK (groom's brother), and Marth NICHOLSON.1,4,5,6,7
In the census of 7 April 1861 in Washingborough, Lincolnshire, she was listed as aged 32 born in Heighington, the wife of Michael PASK (a Farm Baliff, living with his wife Elizabeth, and their children Tom, Ann, Elizabeth, and John.)1
In the census of 2 April 1871 in Washingborough, Lincolnshire, she was listed as aged 43 born in Heighington, the wife of Michael PASK (an Agricultural Labourer, living with his wife Elizabeth, and children Elizabeth, Tom, Annie, John, "Margrett", Martha, and William.)8
In the census of 3 April 1881 in Sudbrooke Grange, Sudbrooke, Lincolnshire, she was listed as aged 53 born in Heighington, the wife of Michael PASK (a Farmer of 298 Acres, living with his wife Elizabeth, and their children Tom, John, Margaret, Martha, and William. Also listed were two Farm Servants.)9
Her husband, Michael, died on 20 June 1889 in Sudbrooke Grange, Sudbrooke, Lincolnshire.10,4
Her husband's, Michael PASK, estate was probated to her in 1889 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire.11
Elizabeth died on 19 July 1894 in 36 Portland Street, Lincoln, Lincolnshire.12,2,13
The inquest into her death was reported in the Lincolnshire Echo, Lincoln, Lincolnshire on 21 July 1894.14 It read:
INQUEST An inquest was held at the Portland Arms Hotel, last night, before the City Coroner, Mr. A. Trotter, to inquire into the cause of the death of Elizabeth Pask, aged 66, which occurred suddenly at her residence, 36, Portland-street, the same morning. In opening the inquest the Coroner said an enquiry would not have been deemed necessary if it were not for the foolish gossip of certain people, in such cases as the present one. It was thought advisable to hold an inquest to prove that no blame could be attached to anyone in the house where deceased had lived.—Thomas Pask, son of the deceased, said his mother had lived with him for three or four months she had not been ill enough for medical attendance, but had frequently complained of dizziness in the head and shortness of breath, and she also had had swollen ankles. Witness saw her on Thursday evening about six o'clock, and left her in bed. About eleven o'clock he heard a thud, as of someone falling out of bed. He then heard his sister calling him, and went with her, and found the deceased lying on the floor. Medical aid was then called, but was of no avail, the deceased being quite dead.—Mrs. Pask, the wife of the last witness, gave corroborative evidence. She said that the deceased had complained of stabbing pains in her head.—Dr. Palmer gave it as his opinion that deceased had died of an attack of syncope causing failure of the heart's action. A verdict of "Death from Natural Causes" was accordingly returned.14
Elizabeth was buried on 22 July 1894 in St. Edward's Church, Sudbrooke, Lincolnshire.2,15
The inquest into her death was reported in the Lincolnshire Chronicle, Lincoln, Lincolnshire on 27 July 1894.16 It read:
An old lady, named Mrs. Elizabeth Pask (relict of the late Mr. Pask, of Sudbrook), who resided with her son at 36, Portland-street, died very suddenly about eleven o'clock on Thursday night. She had, it seems, retired to rest for the night, but about the time stated the son heard a sound as of something falling, and on going into his mother's bedroom he found the deceased lying on the floor quite dead. She had evidently tumbled off the bed, it is supposed whilst in a fit. An inquest was ordered to be held. This was held last Friday at the Portland Arms Inn, Lincoln, before the Deputy-Coroner (A. Trotter, Esq.), Mr. John Henry Gadd being the foreman of the jury.—Tom Pask, son of the deceased, said she had lived with him for the last three months. She was about sixty-six years of age. Deceased went to bed early in the afternoon, not being very well. Shortly after eleven o'clock, just as witness had gone to bed. he heard a thud in his mother's room, and on going to see what was the cause thereof he found deceased lying on the floor with her arm over her head. She appeared to have fallen off the bed. She breathed once or twice, and then expired. A doctor was at once sent for. Deceased had been out of sorts for long time, often complaining of her head. She had not been subject to fainting fits, but about a fortnight ago, when out shopping, she turned dizzy, and had to go out into the street for fresh air. Deceased had some property. —Mrs. Pask corroborated, adding deceased told her that whenever she lifted her head to look up she would turn dizzy. Dr. Palmer deposed to having been called to see the deceased about half-past eleven the previous night. Life was then quite extinct, and from an examination he made of the body, he came to the conclusion that death was due to failure of the heart's action. There were no suspicious circumstances connected with the case. The swelling of the ankle, of which deceased complained, was one of the symptoms of heart weakness.—This was the whole of the evidence, and the jury returned a verdict in accordance with the doctor's testimony.16

Her estate was probated to her two sons Tom, and William, on 11 September 1894 in Lincoln, Lincolnshire.13
